Governor Murphy has issued Executive Order No. 133 which opens up State Parks & Forests for passive recreation effective 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2020. Executive Order No. 133 states, in part, that “[A]ll Counties and Municipalities shall apply, at minimum, the restrictions, policies, and recommendations provided in paragraphs two and three of this Order at any county and municipal parks that are open to the public; however, consistent with Executive Order No. 108 (2020), Counties and Municipalities may impose additional restrictions at county and municipal parks in response to 7 COVID-19.”
With the exception of playgrounds, the Borough of Oceanport has kept its parks and recreational facilities open at all times during the COVID-19 crisis while, at the same time, implementing and enforcing social distancing protocols during their use. Consistent with paragraph 2 of Executive Order No. 133, the Borough of Oceanport’s picnic areas, playgrounds, pavilions and restrooms shall remain closed to the general public until further notice. Similarly, contact sports and organized recreational programs remain prohibited.
Our fields, tennis courts and basketball courts will remain open, subject to existing social distancing protocols. Consistent with paragraph 3 of Executive Order No. 133, therefore, all individuals using Oceanport’s recreational facilities and parks “should be wearing a cloth face covering in all settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, except where doing so would inhibit that individual’s health or where the individual is under two years of age.” Additionally, consistent with Executive Order 107, all individuals using Oceanport’s recreational fields and facilities “must practice social distancing and stay six feet apart whenever practicable, excluding immediate family members, caretakers, household members, or romantic partners.”
With very few exceptions, Oceanport residents have observed social distancing protocols while using our recreational facilities during the COVID-19 crisis. We must continue practicing these protocols going forward for the benefit of both ourselves and those within our community who are most vulnerable to this virus. To that end, while not mandated, it is strongly recommended that a cloth face mask covering be worn by everyone using Oceanport’s recreational fields and facilities, except where doing so would inhibit that individual’s health or where the individual is under two years of age.
